Carl Friedrich Ganahl married Maria Claudia Wegeler in 1832. Their son Arnold (born October 2, 1837; † April 25, 1917) was mayor of Feldkirch from 1885 to 1901, as was his grandfather (mayor from 1824 to 1826) and his uncle Franz (mayor from 1864 to 1867). The eldest son, Rudolf (born June 16, 1833, † September 17, 1910) was also heavily involved in Feldkirch's community politics, was a member of the Reichsrat (1873–1878) and, as his father's successor, president of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce from 1891 to 1910 .

Origin, life and profession

The Ganahl family comes from Bartholomäberg and Johann Ulrich Ganahl ran a trading company (salt over the Schlappinerjoch , back wine) and cattle trade and was a lion landlord in Tschagguns . His youngest son, Johann Josef Ganahl , was the father of Carl Ganahl. Carl Ganahl was the third child from the marriage between Johann Josef Ganahl and Maria Anna (born Klessin, † December 6, 1832 ). He had 13 siblings: Carl Josef (1801–1829), Anna Creszentia (born / adj. 1802), Carl Johann Josef (1803–1804), Johann Josef (1805–1860), Maria Anna Creszentia (born / adj . 1806), Ludwig (1808–1848), Maria Anna Creszentia (born / adj. 1810), Max Franz (1811–1813), Maria Anna Creszentia (1813–1834), Franz Fiedel (1817–1896), Gustav Adolf (born / understood 1818), Amalia Josefa (1820–1889) and Creszentia Adelheid (1822–1851).

Carl Ganahl attended elementary school in Feldkirch and learned the commercial trade in Zurich and Morges . It is uncertain whether Carl Ganahl attended grammar school in Feldkirch.

Carl-Ganahl-Platz in Frastanz still reminds of his work in Vorarlberg.

activity

Carl Ganahl was an active industrialist who received the necessary financial and material resources from his father. In 1829 he took over the colonial, forwarding and commission business in Marktgasse in Feldkirch from his father. In 1833 his father took him on as a one-sixth partner in the new cotton spinning mill on the Ill in Feldkirch and gave him power of attorney in his absence . Carl Ganahl founded a cotton spinning and weaving mill in Frastanz with Fidel Wohlwend in 1835 (see now Vorarlberger Museumswelt ), which was expanded and expanded after a short time. After the death of his father, he also took over the management of the Feldkirch factory and asset management. The Ganahl and Sons company in Feldkirch was merged with the Carl Ganahl and Co. (Frastanz) company in 1872. The company he founded had to cease operations in 1986.

Carl Ganahl's business and political activities were controversial in Vorarlberg during his lifetime. This becomes clear in the obituary in the conservative Vorarlberger Volksblatt of September 17, 1889, when it is stated: “ When he was alive, we were often opponents, he was even more ours and that of our great cause, in which all Christians should be united. We will no longer speak of that, but we want to emphasize one thing in a good way: Carl Ganahl was a Vorarlberger and not only did his country good, but where he harmed it, he was in the intention and opinion of the benefit, even though erroneously. The country will remember the good the longest, and we with it. "

Political activity and association activity

Ganahl was also politically active at the state and municipal level
