Elmar Vonbank

Elmar Vonbank (born July 6, 1921 in Bludenz ; † June 3, 2009 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian archaeologist and museum director.

Life

Vonbank studied prehistory and early history, classical archeology, geography and geology at the University of Innsbruck .
In 1948 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1954 he was appointed director of the Vorarlberg State Museum . After completing his habilitation in 1965, he was appointed associate professor in 1973. In 1974 he was appointed Hofrat of the Vorarlberg state government. In 1976 Vonbank became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . After retiring in 1986, he remained a lecturer at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Innsbruck for a long time.

His research focus throughout his life was the prehistoric settlement area of ​​the Alps and provincial Roman archeology. Vonbank made particular contributions to the excavations of the Roman Brigantium (Bregenz).

Elmar Vonbank was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and a corresponding member of the Swiss Society for Prehistory and Early History. In June 2009 Elmar Vonbank died in Bregenz at the age of 88.
