The Lake Constance research is a series of publications on the natural history of Lake Constance . They appeared between 1893 and 1902 in 9 sections as supplements to the publications of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings and document the results of the first comprehensive scientific exploration of Lake Constance, which was suggested by Count Eberhard von Zeppelin in 1886 .

history

The Swiss natural scientist François-Alphonse Forel published a series of studies on Lake Geneva from 1869 , with which he established limnology as an independent science. The hotelier Count Eberhard von Zeppelin from Konstanz, who knew history and nature, read Forel's writings and came to the conclusion that Lake Constance needed comparable investigations. In 1885 he suggested to the Württemberg government the precise surveying and mapping of Lake Constance, which was carried out the following year by representatives of all five states bordering the lake - namely the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , the kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg , the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Swiss Confederation - was decided. The result is the Lake Constance map drawn up by the Federal Topographical Bureau in 1895. This was accompanied by a scientific survey of the lake, coordinated by Count Eberhard von Zeppelin. For the publication of the results, Zeppelin offered the publications of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , of which he was president from 1892. Zeppelin took part in the research and translated Forel's contributions into German.

content

The Lake Constance research was published between 1893 and 1902 in 9 sections, 3 of which are further subdivided or appended. They remained incomplete because two planned sections on geology and economic geography were not completed. The following sections have been published on (1.) the geographical conditions of Lake Constance, (2.) the previous cartographic recording, (3.) the hydrography (shape of the shore and the seabed), (4.) the water temperature, (5. ) the transparency and color of the water, (6.) the fluctuations in the water level due to the rocking movements of the water surface ( Seiches ), (7.) water and soil samples, (9.) the vegetation, (10.) the fauna:
