Ravensburg City Archives in Kuppelnaustraße

Eitel studied history in Tübingen and was awarded the title of “Dr.” in 1967 with his work The Upper Swabian Imperial Cities in the Age of Guild Rule. phil. ”. From 1967 he was a research assistant in the history department at the University of Konstanz , and from 1971 he attended the Marburg archive school . The interest in the Upper Swabian imperial cities, which was already shown in his dissertation, also determined his further professional life: in 1973 he became head of the Ravensburg City Archives - one of the largest and most widely used municipal archives in southern Germany - and the municipal collections. Eitel was the first full-time city archivist in Ravensburg and the first trained archivist to hold this office. However, he was able to build on the achievements of his predecessor Alfons Dreher , who had already largely opened up the previously largely disordered archive using extensive finding aids and had presented a two-volume city history of the imperial city era. During Eitel's tenure, the city archives moved to the former girls' secondary school (called “Affenkasten”) on Kuppelnaustraße. Under Eitel, the archive material stored by the city archive grew from 150 to 1200 linear meters of shelf, including numerous previously untapped, improperly stored materials from administrations, foundations and associations. The acquisition of collections and estates enriched the city history collection. The first plans for the Museum Humpis-Quartier , which opened in 2009 under his successor Andreas Schmauder , were also made during Eitel's tenure . Archive pedagogy and public relations became important components of the work of the city archive under Eitel.

In 1997, an anthology published by Eitel presented the history of Ravensburg under National Socialism in detail for the first time. He also published countless articles, gave lectures and was responsible for exhibitions on the history and art history of Ravensburg and the surrounding area. Eitel's decades of preoccupation with the history of Ravensburg and the history of Upper Swabia laid the foundation for two extensive works that he was able to tackle after his retirement in 1998: The History of the City of Ravensburg in the 19th and 20th Centuries was published in 2004, the first volume of the story In 2010 he presented Upper Swabia in the 19th and 20th centuries to the years 1800–1870. Both works received benevolent reviews, not least because overview-like works were only available for the period up to the mediatization of the imperial city in 1802.

Eitel is a corresponding member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg, a member of the Advisory Board of the Southwest German Working Group for Urban History Research and was editor of the writings of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , for which he was awarded honorary membership of this association in 2015. Eitel has also been an honorary member of the Oberschwaben Society for History and Culture since 2017.

In 2009 Eitel received the Friedrich-Schiedel Science Prize for the History of Upper Swabia , and in 2018 the Staufer Medal for services to the state of Baden-Württemberg.
