Meride (the name is emphasized on the first syllable: Méride) was until April 13, 2013 a municipality in the Riva San Vitale district , in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village is 582 m above sea level. M. on the slope of Monte San Giorgio and 7 km from Mendrisio station on the Bellinzona - Lugano - Chiasso line of the Swiss Federal Railways , 7.5 km northwest of Chiasso.

history

Meride is first mentioned in writing in 852 as Melene . Later it appears in documents as Melade (963), Meredo (1443) and Merito (1591). In the Middle Ages it belonged to the parish of Riva San Vitale and thus to the diocese of Como . Meride has been federal since 1517. Well-known plasterers and painters come from this village. They found their jobs in Germany , Russia and France , returned home in the winter months and beautified their homes. A few of her works can still be seen today.

Community merger

On April 13, 2013 Meride was incorporated into the political municipality of Mendrisio .

Attractions

The village image is classified in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a site of national importance in Switzerland.

  • The simple parish church of San Rocco stands in the center of the village on Piazza Mastri di Meride and was built in the 17th century; in the interior: painting Santa Lucia (1595) by Giovan Pietro Gnocchi and Sacra Coversazione (around 1850) by Antonio Rinaldi ; Pentecost stained glass (1974) by Roberto Pasotti ; Organ (1841) by Paolo Brambilla.

  • A little apart and above the village is the church of San Silvestro with frescoes from 1690 by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli (1655-1725). The original Romanesque church was completely redesigned in the 16th century.

The fossil museum of Monte San Giorgio in Meride mainly shows finds from nearby Monte San Giorgio that have been collected over the last 150 years. The fossils are 240 million years old and date from the time when what was then Mendrisiotto only partially rose from the sea. Mainly marine fossils are shown, but also impressions of the rich fauna from the Middle Triassic . Among others, the palaeontologist Bernhard Peyer made important discoveries.
