geography

Arzo lies at 501  m above sea level. M. at the foot of the Poncione d'Arzo ( 1015  m above sea level ) in the valley of the Gaggiolo river , whose tributaries form the Valle d'Arzo and Valle Maggiore above Arzo . The village is located around 4 km west-northwest of Mendrisio and around 8 km northwest of Chiasso directly on the border with Italy . The settlement area has almost completely merged with that of Besazio .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1335 as Arzio . Arzo belonged under the Visconti , under Swiss rule and until 1814 to the district of Lugano . In 1798 it formed part of the independent Republic of Riva San Vitale . The place was already known for its marble quarries in the Middle Ages. Arzo marble was used, for example, for the construction of the Como Cathedral , in 1435 for the restoration of the facade of the Broletto in Como, for the altar of the Church of San Pietro in Astano and for the relief on the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Lugano. The village imposed a tax on the marble extracted from its quarries. In the first half of the 14th century Arzo had to provide eight conscripts for the dukes of Milan.

From an ecclesiastical point of view, Arzo belonged to the parish of Riva San Vitale, from which it was replaced on October 15, 1630 and made an independent parish; In the 18th century it owed the mother church of Riva San Vitale an interest of 415 lire, which was later redeemed.

Community merger

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities of Arzo, Capolago , Genestrerio , Mendrisio, Rancate and Tremona was approved by their voters. On April 5, 2009, they joined forces to form the new Mendrisio community.
