The village is around ten kilometers from Chiasso and is close to the Swiss-Italian border. The Laveggio runs through the village .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1190 as a rancade . Traces of settlement go back to antiquity. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the County of Seprio and was perhaps a municipality as early as the end of the 13th century, but is first mentioned as such in 1335. In 1798 it joined the short-lived Republic of Riva San Vitale . In 1528 the village separated from the Pieve Riva San Vitale.

Community merger

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities of Arzo , Capolago , Genestrerio , Mendrisio, Rancate and Tremona was approved by their voters. On April 5, 2009, they joined forces to form the new Mendrisio community.
