Giovanni Serodine: Coronation of Mary in Ascona

Giovanni Serodine (* 1594 in Ascona or 1600 in Rome , † December 21, 1630 in Rome) was a Swiss plasterer and Seicento painter .

Life

Giovanni Serodine, who died young, left only a few pictures, mainly portraits and groups of figures with strong expressiveness. Along with Pier Francesco Mola (1612–1666), he is the most important painter of this time from Ticino. His father Cristoforo Serodine worked as a foreman and building contractor in Rome. Giovanni received his first artistic training from his older brother, first as a plasterer. Together they decorated three rooms of the Palazzo Borghese with paintings and stucco in 1623 , but these have not been preserved. It is not known exactly from whom Giovanni learned to paint; one suspects the workshop of the Antiveduto Grammatica (1570–1626). Apparently his great role model was Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio (1571–1610). As far as we know, no portrait of him has survived. His mother was Caterina Porta. His family's house, Casa Serodine , still exists in Ascona .
