Capolago ( Lombard Cudelag [kudeˈlaːg] , younger Capulag [kapuˈlag] ; German historically Gotlag ) is a village in the political municipality of Mendrisio in the Swiss canton of Ticino .
geography
The village is located at the southern end of an arm of Lake Lugano ; the place name literally means "at the head of the lake". Immediately west of Capolago is Riva San Vitale , north of Melano and south and east of Mendrisio.
history
The municipality is first mentioned in 1296 as Codelago . The castle, built in 1365, was destroyed by the Confederates in 1517. The village church of Santa Maria Maddalena dates from the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century.
After a referendum held on November 25, 2007, the previously independent municipalities of Arzo , Capolago, Genestrerio , Rancate and Tremona were incorporated into the municipality of Mendrisio on April 5, 2009.
