Melano is a municipality in the Ceresio district , in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village is located on the east bank of Lake Lugano at the foot of Monte Generoso and 2 km south of the Maroggia station on the Bellinzona - Chiasso line of the Swiss Federal Railways .

history

The place is first mentioned in 799 as Mellani and was an important port on the lake in the Middle Ages. The village church of Sant'Andrea was built in 1850 by the architect Luigi Fontana .
