Until April 4, 2009, Tremona was a municipality in the Riva San Vitale district , in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

geography

The village is eleven kilometers from Chiasso and the Swiss-Italian border. The St. Mary's Church from the 17th century and the Romanesque church of St. Agata as well as the houses of the Rinaldi, Riva and Pollini families are worth seeing.

history

The village is first mentioned in 864 as Tremona . Excavations from 1991 on the Castello hill north of the village unearthed finds from the Neolithic , Bronze and Hallstatt periods , while at Piasa a necropolis with 42 graves from the Latène and Roman times was found . A settlement on the lower terrace of the hill, explored from 2000–2007 and consisting of 27 row houses from the 2nd half of the 10th century, attests to the settlement in the Middle Ages. Their rapid abandonment in the 13th century is likely due to the fighting between Milan and Como . In 1798 the village joined the short-lived republic of Riva San Vitale .

Community merger

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities of Arzo , Capolago , Genestrerio , Mendrisio , Rancate and Tremona was approved by their voters. On April 5, 2009, they joined forces to form the new Mendrisio community.
