Antonio Rinaldi (architect)
Antonio Rinaldi (* 1709 in Palermo , † April 10, 1794 in Rome ) was an Italian architect and interior designer .
biography
He received his training at Vanvitelli in Rome . In 1751 he was called by Hetman Rasumowski to Baturyn to build his residence there (1752 to 1753). From 1755 he worked in Saint Petersburg . In 1756 he became court architect of the heir to the throne Peter III. on whose behalf he built several buildings in Oranienbaum . Until then, his architecture was in the rococo tradition and he only took the step towards classicism through the influence of Russian architects.
In the following years he received extensive commissions from Catherine II and Orlov . He built the Katharinenkathedrale in what was then Jamburg (today Kingissepp ) and for the latter the marble palace in Saint Petersburg and the Gatchina Palace . In 1784 he retired to Italy. He did not complete the St. Isaac's Cathedral , which he had begun in 1764 ; it was completed by Vincenzo Brenna after 1798 , but was replaced by a monumental new building from 1818.
As an architect in his honor, a marble medallion was made by Fedot Ivanovich Schubin around 1782 at Gatchina Palace .
