The St. Catherine's Cathedral ( Russian Екатерининский собор) in the city Kingissepp ( Russo , formerly Кингисепп Jamburg , Ямбург) on the river Luga is in the style of late Baroque built Russian Orthodox Church in the western part of Leningrad Oblast in the Russian Federation .

history

The architect of the church, built between 1764 and 1782 under the reign of Catherine the Great and consecrated in 1783, was Antonio Rinaldi (around 1710–1794), who had been active in Saint Petersburg since 1755 and who also built the marble palace in Saint Petersburg. Restored in 1912, the cathedral closed in 1932 and was damaged by shelling and bombing during World War II . It has been protected as a cultural heritage since 1960. From 1967 to 1980 it was restored by the architect WM Tichomirow . Until 1990 the cathedral was used as a museum of the history of Alt-Jamburg . In 1991/1992 she returned to the Orthodox Church.

The 45 m high cathedral, a central building in the form of a Greek cross with four conches , is derived from the type of cross-domed church . It has a three-story bell tower with Corinthian pilasters in the west and five domes , including the main dome with a high drum with a diameter of 9 m and a height of 10 m.
