Genestrerio was until April 4, 2009 a municipality in the Mendrisio district , in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The village is ten kilometers from Chiasso and is on the Italian border.

geography

The village is 339 m above sea level. M. on the right bank of the Laveggio and one and a half kilometers southwest of the Mendrisio station on the Bellinzona - Lugano - Chiasso line of the Swiss Federal Railways . Neighboring municipalities are Stabio and Novazzano .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1375 under the then name Cassina de Zenestrario . Genestrerio was already inhabited before the turn of the millennium. Since the beginning of the 16th century, many residents of the village found their income as masons in Italy. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Boffi family and a representative of the Coldirari were known as plasterers. A separate community evolved in the 16th century. Genestrerio became churchly independent in 1599 when it broke away from Balerna .

Community merger

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities of Arzo , Capolago , Genestrerio, Mendrisio, Rancate and Tremona was approved by their voters. On April 5, 2009, they joined forces to form the new Mendrisio community.

  • Carlo Giuseppe Baraini (* around 1690 in Genestrerio; † before 1742 in Rome  ?), Builder, benefactor. Before his death, he bequeathed 1,200 gold thalers (scudi d'oro) to his home village and his house in Rome on the condition that it be used to finance a school.
  • Antonio Maria Baraini (* around 1695 in Genestrerio; † around 1740 there), master builder
  • Francesco Scalini (born August 15, 1792 in Como, † March 8, 1871 in Genestrerio), Austrian engineer and politician
