Rainer Zangerl

Rainer Zangerl (born November 19, 1912 in Winterthur ; † December 27, 2004 ) was a Swiss vertebrate paleontologist who worked in the USA.

Zangerl received his doctorate from the University of Zurich under Bernhard Peyer and went to the USA in 1937. He was curator for fossil reptiles at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and was also temporarily head of the geological department.

With his colleague Eugene Richardson , he made discoveries of shark fossils in Parkes County , Indiana in the 1950s and 1960s . In addition to fossil sharks, another focus of his work was fossil turtles .

In 2003 he received the Romer Simpson Medal of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology , which he co-founded and of which he was an honorary member and president.
