Charles Mortram Sternberg (born September 18, 1885 in Lawrence , Kansas , † September 8, 1981 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian paleontologist (dinosaur).
He was the son of Charles H. Sternberg (1850-1943) who excavated for Edward Drinker Cope and 1912-1917 in Alberta dinosaurs for the Geological Survey of Canada , particularly in the Drumheller region. The US- born Charles Sternberg went to Canada in 1912 with his father and two brothers George F. Sternberg (1883-1969) and Levi Sternberg (1894-1976), who also excavated dinosaurs. They helped found the Calgary Zoo. In 1919, Charles M. Sternberg succeeded Lawrence M. Lambe as head of paleontology at the Geological Survey of Canada . His first publication (on Panoplosaurus , which Lambe was studying) appeared in 1921 with his father. In 1948 he became a curator (nominally Assistant Biologist ) in vertebrate paleontology at the National Museum of Canada . He retired in 1950, but continued to publish until 1970. In 1955 he helped found the Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta.
He was the first to describe Edmontonia (1928), Stenonychosaurus (1932), Parksosaurus (1937), Pachyrhinosaurus (1950), Montanoceratops (1951) and Brachylophosaurus (1953). He also discovered early finds of Daspletosaurus and Chirostenotes (which he called Macrophalangia ).
In 1949 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada . He was an honorary doctor from the University of Calgary and Carleton University in Ottawa .
