Parksosaurus (" Parks' Lizard") is a genus of bird basin dinosaur from the late North American Upper Cretaceous (early Maastrichtian ).
It belongs to the Hypsilophodontidae , a group of small herbivores . The only scientifically described species ( type species ) is Parksosaurus warreni .
description
Parksosaurus reached a length of about 2.5 meters and weighed about as much as a modern wolf . The animal's teeth, with their low, rounded ridges, are unique among all known avian dinosaurs.
As with all hypsilophodontids, his defense strategy was based on escape. He was probably able to accelerate and escape that way.
Fossil finds
Fossils of the genus come from the Maastrichtian in the Canadian province of Alberta . The type skeleton of the species P. warreni has the catalog number ROM 804. It is a partial skeleton. The type locality is Rumsey Ferry Road with a terrestrially deposited sandstone from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation . From parksosaurus an incomplete skull was found. The left side of the skull was still in situ when it was found and is well preserved, but the right side was exposed to weathering and broken.
Naming
William Parks published the first description of a new species in 1926 and placed it in the genus Thescelosaurus . Charles Mortram Sternberg assigned the species in his work from 1937 to the newly established genus Parksosaurus . Thescelosaurus and Parksosaurus are closely related.
