history

The museum was founded on April 16, 1912 by the Province of Ontario and opened on March 19, 1914. It is adjacent to Queen's Park and the University of Toronto . The building is on the corner of Bloor Street and Avenue Road, just off the Museum Station on the Toronto Subway . Although this place was outside of the city limits at the time, it was chosen because of its proximity to the university . The university and the ROM have always had close relationships and share many scientific facilities and resources .

Construction of the museum began in 1914. First the west wing was completed, which is used today for storage purposes and as office space. The museum was generously expanded in the 1930s as a government job creation scheme during the Great Depression. In 1964 the planetarium was added on the south side and in 1975 the multi-storey atrium , which doubled the usable area. The planetarium was closed in 1995, but then temporarily reopened as a children's museum in 1998. Various traveling exhibitions then took place there.

As part of "The Crystal" project (the crystal ), the museum was designed by the 2006/2007 known architect Daniel Libeskind rebuilt and expanded. In the course of this renovation, the planetarium and the parts of the building completed in 1975 were torn down and replaced by a huge crystal shape protruding from the side of the building. The building was reopened on June 3, 2007.
