Life

Donald Frank Glut grew up in Chicago . He started filming at the age of nine. The themes of these films - dinosaurs , fictional monsters, and superheroes - kept him busy all his life. He studied at DePaul University in Chicago and later at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he earned a degree. Among other things, he worked as a book seller, musician, singer, actor and director. But mostly he wrote. He has written advertising copy, magazine articles, scripts for film and television, texts for comics and songs, novels, short stories and non-fiction books.

Two of his non-fiction books on dinosaurs - The Dinosaur Dictionary (1972) and Dinosaurs: The Encyclopedia (1997) - as well as the book for the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back (1980) are particularly well known . He also wrote ten novels about the Frankenstein monster. The first two appeared first in Spanish, the following eight first in German. The English-language editions were published later.

Glut helped develop the background story and characters for the US toy manufacturer Mattel's action figure series Masters of the Universe . These action figures formed the basis for the film Masters of the Universe, as well as for television series, comics, radio plays, and video games. In 2014, Glut lost a lawsuit against Mattel. The company took the position that he had created the characters on their behalf and that he had no marketing rights.

In the 1950s and 1960s he directed a number of short films. Several feature films followed in the 1990s and 2000s. In addition to his own directorial work, he was involved in several television series as a screenwriter, especially in the 1980s. These include Im Land der Saurier , X-Men , RoboCop , DuckTales - News from Duckburg , Jonny Quest , Spider-Man 5000 , Spider-Man and his extraordinary friends , Transformers , Action Force - The new heroes , Dink, the little dinosaur , Dino-Riders , The Gobots , Monchhichis , Space Sentinels , Dynodog, the Wonder Dog and The Biskitts .

Glut is co-owner and president of the film production company Frontline Entertainment, Inc. This has released several of his films, e. B. Dinosaur Valley Girls (1996) and Blood Scarab (2008).
