Roger Ljung (born January 8, 1966 in Lomma , Sweden ) is a former Swedish football player . The midfielder took part in two world championships and one European championship final with the Swedish national team. He won the Swedish and Turkish championship titles once, as well as the Swedish national cup once .

Career

Career start and title wins in Sweden

Ljung started playing football at Lunds BK at the age of six as the closest club, GIF Nike, did not have a youth team of the appropriate age. Here he went through the individual youth teams and made his debut as a teenager in the men's team of the club. At the side of the later national player Leif Engqvist , he missed relegation with the club at the end of the second division season in 1984 as thirteenth in the table.

The duo had drawn attention to themselves and shortly after Engqvist had signed a contract with Malmö FF, Ljung also moved to the club in the Allsvenskan . In the team supervised by Roy Hodgson , which ended the regular season in the first place in the table in the season 1985 and failed in the championship finals in the semi-finals at IFK Göteborg , he was used as a substitute. In the following season, too, he only contributed sporadically to winning the championship alongside Ingemar Erlandsson , Jan Möller and Jonas Thern . It was not until the 1987 season that Ljung made his breakthrough at Malmö FF. He benefited from the injuries suffered by Hans Borg and Magnus Andersson . As a regular player, he moved with the team again in the final of the Swedish championship. With top scorer Lasse Larsson , Stefan Schwarz and Joakim Nilsson , he missed the championship win after a 0-1 defeat and a 2-1 home win due to the away goals rule .

Nevertheless, Ljung had played his way into national coach Olle Nordin 's notebook . On January 12, 1988, he made his debut as part of a four-nation tournament on the Canary Islands in a 4-1 success over the GDR national soccer team in the national jersey, when Jonas Thern, who scored two goals, Peter Truedsson , Stefan Rehn and on the other side entered Andreas Thom in the list of goalscorers. Three days later he contributed to the tournament win in the 1-0 win over Finland with a goal from Thern. At the four-country tournament held at Easter 1988 , he was part of the winning team alongside Glenn Strömberg , Mats Gren and Robert Prytz . In addition, he was included in the summer squad for the Olympic selection, which moved into the quarter-finals of the 1988 Olympic Games under the direction of coach Benny Lennartsson .

After Ljung won first place in the regular season with Malmö FF in the 1988 season, he won the Von Rosens for the first time alongside Niclas Nylén , Jonas Thern and Martin Dahlin with the club after victories over Örgryte IS and Djurgårdens IF Cup for the national championship title. In the summer of the year he celebrated his second title win with Malmö FF when Djurgårdens IF was beaten in the final. A short time later he left the club and his home country.

Years abroad

Ljung moved to Switzerland in the summer of 1989 and signed a contract with BSC Young Boys . His compatriot Tord Grip , who looked after the Swiss club, had directed the midfielder to the Bern club. After this was replaced by Pál Csernai , he left the club after just one season. In the summer of 1990 belonged to the squad of the Swedish selection at the World Cup finals in Italy . Only in the 1: 2 defeat against Brazil at the beginning he was on the field, the two defeats against Costa Rica and Scotland he followed from the bench.

Ljung moved within Switzerland for FC Zurich , in the National League A had risen. At the side of Beat Studer , Augustine Makalakalane , Christoph Gilli and Vincent Fournier , he was one of the club's regular players, who had to compete with the club in the promotion and relegation round after only three victories this season in regular time. There succeeded with seven wins without defeat as the first in the table of relegation. Nevertheless, he moved on after a season and left Switzerland after two years.

Ljung moved to the neighboring Alpine republic of Austria and joined FC Admira Wacker in the summer of 1991 . With trainer Sigfried Held , he moved into the final of the ÖFB Cup against FK Austria Wien at the side of Dietmar Kühbauer , Olaf Marschall , Wolfgang Knaller and Peter Artner . With a goal from Valdas Ivanauskas shortly before the final whistle, he and the club had to admit defeat to the champions after a 1-0 defeat, who won the double . Before he took part in the 1992/93 European Cup Winners' Cup with the club , he took part in the 1992 European Championship with the national team. There he knew how to surprise with the national selection and reached the semi-finals alongside Tomas Brolin , Anders Limpar and Joachim Björklund . There he celebrated his tournament premiere when he replaced the yellow-banned Patrik Andersson in the game against Germany . He could not prevent the 2: 3 defeat against the later European runner-up.

In the Austrian championship 1992/93 Ljung reached third place in the table with his club. The highlight of the season, however, was the duel against the Belgian representative Royal Antwerp in the second round of the European Cup. The Austrian club traveled to Antwerp with the burden of a 2-4 home defeat in the first leg and were already 2-0 down at the break. In a sensational second half, four more goals were scored away, so the team forced an extension. There she conceded the 3: 4 and was eliminated from the competition despite a self-sacrificing fight.

Ljung had also made a name for itself outside of the German-speaking world. In the summer of 1993 he moved to the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . At the reigning national champion, he ensured the successful title defense at the side of Hakan Şükür , Falko Götz , Bülent Korkmaz , Reinhard Stumpf and Uğur Tütüneker . After the season he took part in his third tournament with the national team. As a regular player, he played in all seven games of the national selection during the tournament. In the 2-2 draw at the start against the Cameroonian national team , he scored the first goal for the Northern Europeans with the goal for the interim 1-0 lead. After reaching third place at the end of the tournament, he was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal with the national team .

Shortly before the start of the tournament, MSV Duisburg surprisingly announced Ljung's commitment. In the Bundesliga , however, he could hardly find his way around. At the side of Stefan Böger , Joachim Hopp , Peter Közle , Rainer Schütterle and Oliver Westerbeek , he only made 13 season appearances. At the end of the season he rose with the club in the second division.

After retirement

After six years abroad, Ljung returned to Sweden. Although he had some offers to continue his career in the Allsvenskan, he ended his active career. First he worked with the Italian player consultant Vincenzo Morabito before he founded his own player agency in Landskrona under the name Roger Ljung Promotion AB .
