Joachim Björklund (born March 15, 1971 in Växjö ) is a former Swedish football player .

Career

debut

Björklund played in his youth at Östers IF . In 1990 he moved to Brann Bergen in the Norwegian Tippeligaen . He quickly fought for a regular place here and made his debut in the Swedish national team in 1991 . A year later he was part of the Swedish squad at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and the European Championship in his own country , in which he was on the field in all four games.

Successful years at IFK Göteborg

After three years in Norway, he returned to Sweden to IFK Göteborg in 1993 . With the club he won the Swedish championship three times in a row from 1993 to 1995.

At the 1994 World Cup , he was one of the permanent staff and was used in all Swedish games. He reached the semi-finals against Brazil with the national team . After a 0-1 defeat, they missed the final, but were able to look forward to the bronze medal after a clear 4-0 win against listless Bulgarians .

In the Champions League season 94/95 Björklund was able to surprise with his team when FC Barcelona and Manchester United were beaten and won the group. Although the club subsequently failed at Bayern Munich due to the away goals rule , players like Björklund outside Sweden had aroused interest.

Abroad

In the summer of 1995 changed Björklund to the Italian club Vicenza Calcio , who in the Serie B played. At the end of the season in which he played 33 season games managed third place and promotion to the Serie A .

However, Björklund left the club after only one season and went to Scotland for the Glasgow Rangers . In his first season he won the Scottish Championship with the club. After finishing second the following year and winning the Scottish League Cup , he ended his engagement in Scotland.

Back in southern Europe

Björklund joined Valencia CF in 1998 in the Primera División . After 19 years without a title, the Copa del Rey was won again in the 1998/99 season . Atlético Madrid were clearly defeated 3-0 in the final. In 2000 and 2001, the club was in the final of the UEFA Champions League , but Björklund was not on the pitch.

After the Swedish national team missed the qualification for the EM 96 and the World Cup 98 , the return to a major tournament succeeded with the participation in the EURO 2000 . As in the previous tournaments, Björklund was again part of the team. However, Sweden retired early in the group after only winning one point against Turkey . Björklund played his last of 78 international matches on October 11, 2000 against Slovakia.

In 2001 Björklund left Spain and returned to Italy. He was under contract with SSC Venice for one season . However, the commitment is not characterized by success, the newly promoted club is only bottom of the table.

On the island

In 2002 Björklund signed with Sunderland AFC . However, he also missed relegation in the Premier League with only 19 points . This is the worst result in the club's history. In the following season, third place in the First Division and the club reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup , where Millwall FC won 1-0 at Old Trafford . Coach Mick McCarthy sorted him out at the end of the season and Björklund moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers , who were relegated to the Football League Championship . Here he only made a few appearances at the beginning of the season and retired after the end of the season.

After finishing his active career, he was hired by his former club, Valencia CF, as a talent scout for the Scandinavian region.
