With SV Spittal, Knaller became champions in the 2nd Bundesliga (1983) and was promoted to the First Bundesliga. In total, he played for SV Spittal in the Bundesliga for five years. In the 1987 season he moved to his brother Walter Knaller's club , then FC Admira Wacker , where he was in goal until the summer of 1996. During this time Admira Wacker qualified seven times for the European Cup, in which one met opponents such as AC Bologna, Juventus Turin, RSC Anderlecht, Ferencvaros Budapest, Royal Antwerp, FC Luzern, AS Cannes etc. With Admira Wacker, Knaller reached the ÖFB Cup final three times and was once Supercup winner.

Despite these difficulties, the club qualified twice for the European Cup during this time and was three times Indoor Cup winner.
In the 2002 season Knaller made his comeback in the south of the city with what is now VfB Admira Wacker Mödling , where he was involved in staying up and played his 500th first division game. After two more seasons with Admira Wacker, he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for LASK in the 2004/05 season . In the Austrian soccer championship 2005/06 he contributed to the runner-up in the second division.
With the 2006/07 season he moved to the Lower Austrian regional league club FC Waidhofen / Ybbs and one season later (2007/08) he played with his son Stefan in the same team at the ASK Baumgarten regional league club . After a year break, Knaller moved in summer 2009 as a field player to the Lower Austrian club SK Breitenfurt in 1st class East.
In 2008 Wolfgang Knaller, like his brother Walter Knaller, was elected to the Admira / Wacker century team as the goalkeeper of the century .
Wolfgang Knaller played a total of 705 Bundesliga games in Austria (519 First Bundesliga, 186 Second Bundesliga), 32 European Cup games, 48 ÖFB Cup games (three times in the cup finals), once Supercup winner, three times Indoor Cup winner, once champion.
Knaller has been called up for the Austrian national team 26 times. He made his debut on October 16, 1991 at the international match in Belfast (1: 2 defeat in the European Championship qualification against Northern Ireland). He was also on the national team's World Cup squad for the 1998 World Cup in France.
From 2010 to 2014 Knaller was goalkeeping coach at First Vienna FC in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the same time Knaller was also head coach / goalkeeper coach at 1. Simmeringer SC in the Regionalliga Ost.
From 2014 to 2018 Wolfgang Knaller was a goalkeeper trainer at SKN St. Pölten . In the 2015/16 season he was champion of the second-rate first division with SKN St.Pölten. In July 2018, Jürgen Macho replaced him as goalkeeper coach at St. Pölten.
