Martin Hinteregger (born September 7, 1992 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) is an Austrian football player . The central defender with a strong header plays for Eintracht Frankfurt and is an Austrian national player .

Career

youth

Hinteregger started playing soccer a few days before his seventh birthday in 1999 in the offspring of the SGA Sirnitz in the Carinthian community of Albeck in the Feldkirchen district . There he went through various youth league classes and was active in the club's youth teams under his father Franz Hinteregger, who works as a junior manager at SGA Sirnitz . Hinteregger won some U10 to U14 group championships with the Sirnitz youth teams and at the 3rd Carinthian futsal indoor soccer championships in 2006 with the SGA Sirnitz U14 team ranked third behind FC Kärnten and SV Villach . Hinteregger was one of the players who made it through the state training centers to the Carinthian state selection.

In July 2006 the young defender was transferred to the cooperation club FC Red Bull Salzburg . After twelve youth appearances and two goals in the 2006/07 season, another 19 championship games and one goal in the 2007/08 season followed, in which he was already accepted as a permanent member of the youth department of FC Red Bull Salzburg and no longer as a cooperation player in the squad was standing. After playing in several U17 games this season, the player made his first appearance in March 2009 for the club's U19 youth team, which is part of the Toto- sponsored U19 youth league. In the 1-0 home win over the U19s of FK Austria Wien , he played through the full season. On May 2, 2009 he scored his first championship goal for Salzburg when he scored the 1-1 goal in the 26th minute in the 2: 3 away defeat against the U19 academy team from Vorarlberg . During this season, Hinteregger played a total of eleven U19 championship games and scored two goals. The Carinthian-born was also an integral part of the academy's left-wing defense for the 2009/10 season, for which he played 14 games and scored four goals until the end of March 2010.

Club career

Red Bull Juniors

After joining the club's second professional team with play in the second highest Austrian football league at the beginning of 2010, he made his professional and league debut on April 23, 2010 in a 2-0 away win over FC Dornbirn for the full duration of the match.

With his first professional game over a full 90 minutes and the predominantly good performance he made himself recommended for further assignments in the first division. The reason for his first appearance was the failure of the defensive all-rounder Harald Pichler , who had to sit out for a game due to a yellow card suspension. For the 2010/11 season he was a fixed point of the second team and was also nominated for the European Cup squad of the fighting team. Due to the injury of Andreas Ulmer , he sat on the bench against Manchester City as a substitute. He scored his first goal for the Juniors in the Salzburg City Derby against SV Austria Salzburg .

FC Red Bull Salzburg

Hinteregger made his first appearances with the professionals of FC Red Bull Salzburg in the 2010/11 season under coach Huub Stevens . He made his debut in the Austrian Bundesliga on October 16, 2010 in the championship game against Kapfenberger SV. Just five days later he made his European Cup debut in the game against Juventus Turin .

In the 2011/12 season he was finally integrated as a permanent part of the professional squad by the new coach Ricardo Moniz . He mostly played as a left defender this season. In the playoff for the Europa League he scored the goal to win 1-0 against Omonia Nicosia , which meant promotion to the group stage after the 2-1 away defeat. After he was even named team captain by Moniz at the beginning of the spring season 2012, he was briefly removed from the squad three weeks later for disciplinary reasons because he is said to have plunged into Salzburg's nightlife after a home defeat against SV Mattersburg . Three days later, Hinteregger was pardoned again. The season ended with a double win from the championship and the cup .

After Moniz resigned in the summer of 2012, Hinteregger was mainly used in central defense, sometimes also in defensive midfield, from the new coach Roger Schmidt in the 2012/13 season . Hinteregger quickly earned his status as a regular in this position. FC Red Bull Salzburg were eliminated in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League against Luxembourg champions F91 Dudelange in the second round, missed the championship and failed in the cup against regional league club FC Pasching .

In the 2013/14 season , Hinteregger became head of defense. In 2014 he won his second title in the Austrian Bundesliga with the team . Failed in the Champions League qualification due to Fenerbahçe Istanbul , they advanced to the round of 16 in the Europa League and lost to FC Basel . In the 2-1 defeat in the second leg, Hinteregger was absent due to a yellow card suspension.

After coach Schmidt left the club in the summer of 2014, Hinteregger remained a regular under Adi Hütter . In the 2014/15 season , FC Red Bull Salzburg was only the third club to defend the two national championship and cup titles. International was the last sixteen of the Europa League against the Spanish representative FC Villarreal ; previously they had failed in the play-offs for the UEFA Champions League at Malmö FF . In the 2015/16 season, Hinteregger and FC Red Bull Salzburg failed again at Malmö FF in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League . The new coach Peter Zeidler , who had followed Adi Hütter in the summer, deleted Hinteregger after his criticism of his teammates and the club for the game against FK Austria Wien . Due to injury, Hinteregger has only made four appearances in the league game and one game in the ÖFB Cup since August 2015 . Due to the upcoming European Championship finals in France in 2016 , he decided to change clubs.

Borussia Mönchengladbach and a short return to Salzburg

In January 2016 he was until end of season for Germany at Borussia Moenchengladbach awarded. Hinteregger was used for Gladbach in ten Bundesliga games, Borussia did not use an existing purchase option.

For the season 2016/17 returned Hinteregger first to Salzburg back. From the beginning of July to the end of August he played eleven games for RB, five of them in the league and all six of Salzburg's games in the Champions League qualification , in which they failed in the play-offs at Dinamo Zagreb .

FC Augsburg

On August 31, 2016, Hinteregger moved to the German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg . He signed a contract until summer 2021. He played his first game for FC Augsburg on September 11, 2016 in a 2-1 win in the away game against Werder Bremen . On December 17, the 15th matchday of the 2016/17 season, he scored his first goal in the German Bundesliga with the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against his former club Borussia Mönchengladbach.

As a result, Hinteregger played a total of 83 competitive games for FC Augsburg, scoring five goals. In the first two seasons, Augsburg and Hinteregger placed in the middle of the league table before the team slipped into the relegation battle in the 2018/19 season . Following the 2-0 defeat on January 26, 2019 against his ex-club Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hinteregger publicly criticized head coach Manuel Baum in an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk . In response, the club issued him a "drastic fine", suspended him from team training and announced a little later that Hinteregger was free to look for a new club.

"I can't say anything positive about him and I won't say anything negative either."

Eintracht Frankfurt

On the last day of the transfer period, on January 31, 2019, Hinteregger switched to league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season . Under his compatriot Adi Hütter , under whom he had already played in Salzburg, he established himself as a regular player and by the end of the season he was in the starting line-up in 14 league games, in which he scored a goal. He was also used seven times (always from the start) in the Europa League and scored one goal. Eintracht Frankfurt reached the semi-finals, in which they were eliminated on penalties against eventual winners Chelsea FC ; Hinteregger missed his attempt.

In preparation for the 2019/20 season , Hinteregger briefly returned to FC Augsburg, which Martin Schmidt took over as head coach in April 2019 . In August 2019, Hinteregger was firmly signed by Eintracht Frankfurt and given a contract until 2024.

National team

Junior national teams

In April 2008 Hinteregger was appointed to an Austrian national team for the first time. Austria's U17 team boss Hermann Stadler brought him into the 18-man squad as one of two Red Bull Salzburg academy players for the international match against Macedonia's U17s in Baumgarten, Burgenland . On April 16, 2008, the defender made his youth national team debut when he was substituted on in the 70th minute of the game. This was followed by two more appearances in this age group, but in the elite round of qualifying for the U17 European Football Championship in 2009 , Hinteregger was only part of the extended squad. From 2009 to 2011 Hinteregger was part of the Austrian U18 and Austrian U19 teams and played a total of nine friendlies.

U21 national team

On November 17, 2010, Hinteregger made his debut in the Austrian U21 , after the then U21 team boss Andreas Herzog had called him up for the first time a few days earlier. Hinteregger was substituted on after the break in the friendly international match against the Wales U21s in Newport .

After initially very sporadic appearances in the U21s, including a game in the U21 European Championship qualification for 2013 , which Austria only finished in a disappointing 4th place, Hinteregger gradually became an increasingly important part of the junior national team. In the first three games of the U21 European Championship qualification for 2015 in autumn 2013 - now under U21 team boss Werner Gregoritsch - he was already a regular player, and he even acted as captain in the game against the Bosnian U21 . In the end, Hinteregger did not make any more appearances in the Austrian U21 national team because he was promoted to the circle of the senior national team.

A national team

After being nominated twice on call by team boss Marcel Koller , Hinteregger made his first appearance for the Austrian national A team in November 2013 . On November 19, 2013, he was on the field for over 90 minutes in the 1-0 friendly home win against the USA in Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium . In the two other friendly matches against Uruguay and Iceland in spring 2014 , Hinteregger was recommended for a regular place, and so the national team started with the central defender duo Hinteregger and Aleksandar Dragovic in the European Championship qualification for 2016 . On May 12, 2016, national coach Marcel Koller appointed him to the squad for the 2016 European Championship . He was part of the team in the tournament and played all three preliminary round games over the full 90 minutes. As the bottom of the table with only one point from three games, the team then eliminated.

Family / private

Hinteregger comes from a sports-loving family. His grandfather was active as an athlete when the SGA Sirnitz was founded. Martin's father, Franz Hinteregger, later found the club and is still working there as a youth football coach and youth manager. Martin's sister Christina is also part of the club; she plays as Libera in the local women's team and is the club's secretary.

Others

Hinteregger is regarded as an atypical football professional; his greatest hobby is hunting . He is also known for not mincing words in interviews. So he said in the 2013 championship finish in the direction of the later champions Austria Wien that the Viennese would "shit". In September 2014, after he had a clash with WAC coach Dietmar Kühbauer in the game against Wolfsberger AC , he scolded: "He's the same suitcase as a player."

In interviews, Hinteregger criticized the development towards higher transfer fees and growing commercialization in professional football, as well as the low privacy of professional footballers. In addition, in his opinion, the use of smartphones is increasing in everyday life. Hinteregger has therefore separated from his smartphone and replaced it with a clamshell phone that can only be used to make calls, text messages and play the game Snake . Hinteregger can no longer be reached via WhatsApp and receives the information from his team's group chat from a teammate. He also criticized that he had to pretend and that you could no longer be yourself in professional football. He also surprised with the statement that he "would have preferred to have been a professional in the 80s and would have had a funnier, more authentic life for it".

During his time at Eintracht Frankfurt , Hinteregger made such a good impression due to his defensive performance and his attitude that the Eintracht video podcast FUSSBALL 2000 dedicated a song to him with the title “Hinti Army Now”. This is an adaptation of the song "In the Army Now" by the British band Status Quo . In addition, some Eintracht Frankfurt fans have come together to form the “Hinti Army” fan group.
