Snake ( English for queue is) a computer game classic , wherein a is straight or perpendicular moving coil is controlled by a pitch. The aim of the game is to take in the randomly appearing "bites" offered as food and to avoid obstacles, including one's own snake's body. While the queue grows with every bite, maneuvering becomes more and more difficult as the playing field becomes increasingly full - and with a possibly faster basic clock.

more details

In early versions in the time before the IBM PC , the snake was controlled by cursor arrow keys or even certain letters on the alpha keyboard; the representation consisted of semi-graphic symbols in black and white. Since computers have been equipped with a mouse or joystick , they have been operated intuitively, and with technical developments, color and full graphics have been added.

With the inclusion of each feed Happens (sometimes English Apple's called, so apples ), the snake bit longer. In some variants, points are assigned to the bites (usually a single-digit number), which indicate the increase in length. In addition, other snakes and so-called can Plums (English for plums ) appear as obstacles that must not be touched - the latter only its tail. Touching the edges of the playing field or one's own tail also leads to the snake's death - and thus to the end of the game.

A similar variety was later adopted in the movie Tron and its associated games .

An early, possibly even the first, version of Snake was programmed in 1979 with the so-called "Hyper-Worm" by F. Seger on a TRS-80 . Even in early versions of the Unix derivative Sinix z. B. this game was included as a C program.

Snake can also be played on YouTube videos using the 2010 version of the software. The game is activated by pressing the arrow keys (left) for at least two seconds and (up) or (down) and can be played in both the playing and paused video in both window and full-screen mode. If the playback software is waiting for video data from the Internet (i.e. if the dots are rotating in the center of the window), pressing the left arrow key can be omitted.

The game exists in different variations: In the case of more difficult variations, the snake must also be led through a labyrinth, the walls of which must also not be touched. In order to enable higher high scores , bonus points have been introduced in some versions and the side walls have been removed.

Today the game is playable on many cell phones out of the box. Nokia models of the 1990s generation in particular had Snake preinstalled. The somewhat newer editions for mobile phones, such as Anaconda , offer newly edited graphics compared to Snake and various game modes that place somewhat higher demands on the player.

In the meantime there are multiplayer versions on the Internet in which many players can play at the same time without any limitation of the playing field.

In 2017, Google released its own version of the game as an Easter Egg . When the phrases "Snake", "Play Snake", "Snake Video" and "Snake Game" were entered.

Awards

In 2005 Taneli Armanto received a special award from the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) for his contribution to the growth of the mobile entertainment industry.

Nibbles

A well-known version of Snake was under the name Nibbles ( English for rodents or nibblers ), also known under the source code file name NIBBLES.BAS, as a QBasic program a component of MS-DOS for a few years and thus in the early 1990s available on almost every PC.

It is possible to play a similar game called Nibbles 2 on some Texas Instruments graphing calculators .
