Definition of terms

The full screen mode, sometimes also called immersive mode, has to be distinguished from a merely maximized window . Although a program takes up almost the entire screen, the full-screen mode goes one step further: The control elements of the window and its frame are also hidden, as are the taskbar or other elements of the operating system. Often elements are also hidden within the window, such as the menu bar or toolbars . This enables the user to concentrate fully on the content.

Depending on the program and operating system, the hidden elements are temporarily displayed when the mouse pointer moves to the edge of the screen.
