De Laat made his debut in the World Cup in Dresden in February 2011 and finished in 28th place over 500 m and 1500 m. In the 2014/15 season he reached the World Cup in Shanghai with second place with the relay over 5000 m, his first podium in the World Cup. At the 2015 European Championships in Dordrecht , he won the bronze medal with the relay over 5000 m. In the 2015/16 season he won the 5000 m relay at the World Cup in Montreal and Dordrecht. His best placings at the 2016 World Championships in Seoul were 26th place over 1500 m and eighth place with the relay. In the following season he came second in the World Cup four times with the relay and also won his first World Cup victory in the relay in Minsk . At the European Championships 2017 in Turin and the World Championships 2017 in Rotterdam , he won the gold medal with the relay. In the 2017/18 season he took second place with the relay in Dordrecht and Seoul. At the 2018 European Championships in Dresden, he won the gold medal with the relay and at the 2018 World Championships in Montreal he came 26th in the all- around event and fourth with the relay. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he was tenth over 1000 m and sixth over 1500 m. The following season he won the season in Almaty and ran with the season in Calgary in third place. At the 2019 European Championships in Dordrecht, he won the silver medal with the relay. In the all-around competition he achieved 12th place there.
In the 2019/20 season, De Laat achieved seven top ten placings, including third place over 1000 m in Dordrecht, tenth place in the World Cup over 500 m. He also won the mixed relay in Shanghai . At the 2020 European Championships in Debrecen , he won the silver medal in the relay and over 1500 m.
