Mato Jajalo (born May 25, 1988 in Jajce ) is a Bosnian - Croatian football player .

Career

origin

Jajalo, who was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina , fled to Germany with his family in 1990 due to the war in Yugoslavia , where he started playing football at DJK Eiche Offenbach in 1993 .

Career start in Croatia

In 1999 he returned to Croatia where he started his professional career at NK Slaven Belupo . He made his debut on July 21, 2007 in the 0-1 defeat in the away game at NK Osijek in the top Croatian league, the 1st HNL . On August 4, 2007 he scored his first goal in the away game against NK Zagreb , the game was won 2-0. In his first season, he made 30 league games and scored four goals. He finished the season with the team in second place behind the champions Dinamo Zagreb . He made his debut at European club level on August 16, 2007 in the home game against Turkish representatives Galatasaray Istanbul , when they met in the second qualifying round for the 2007/08 UEFA Cup . The first and second leg won 2-1 by the favorite from Istanbul, in both games Jajalo ran onto the field from the start, but remained without a goal.

In the following year, the team as runner-up in the Croatian championship was again not directly qualified and met in the first qualifying round against the Maltese club FC Marsaxlokk , which they clearly defeated in two games. In the following qualifying round against Aris Thessaloniki with a narrow success they made it into the first round, in which the team was eliminated from the tournament against CSKA Moscow . Jajalo was used in a total of four games in which he was denied a goal. Change to Italy

In the summer of 2009, the Croatian U-21 international, who was able to establish himself in the selection, left his home country and signed with the Italian club AC Siena . On the second day of the 2009/10 season he made his debut for the Tuscan club in Serie A and was substituted on for Michele Fini shortly before the end of the game . As a result, the midfielder made the leap into the starting eleven. Already two game days before the end of the season, however, the premature relegation from the top division was certain, in the decisive 1: 2 home defeat against US Palermo he ran again from the start and was replaced by the Argentine Marcelo Larrondo after 84 minutes . For the 2010/11 season, Jajalo moved to the German Bundesliga on loan and signed on to 1. FC Cologne . The club also acquired a purchase option on the midfield player. At 1. FC Köln Jajalo was a regular player and top performer. Jajalo made his Bundesliga debut on August 21, 2010 when he was on the starting line-up against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday one . He made his first goal for the billy goats on March 19, 2011, when he scored 1: 4 against Hamburger SV (2: 6) on matchday 27 .

Change to the Bundesliga and loan to Sarajevo

For the 2011/12 season Jajalo was signed by 1. FC Köln. On February 11, 2014, after two strong seasons and half a weak one, he was loaned to FK Sarajevo for the remainder of the season to Bosnia-Herzegovina , with which he won the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Football Cup .

Via Croatia back to Italy

At the end of the 2013/14 season , the contract between Jajalo and 1. FC Köln was terminated. He then moved to his home country for HNK Rijeka . After performing well, he left Croatia after six months and returned to the Italian Serie A in Palermo in January 2015 . In the summer of 2019, Jajalo moved to Udinese Calcio on a three-year contract .

National team

Mato Jajalo played for the Croatian U-21 national team from 2007 to 2010 and was temporarily its captain. He made his debut for Croatia's senior national team on November 12, 2014. He played two friendlies for Croatia before he decided in the summer of 2016 to play for his native Bosnia-Herzegovina . He finally made his debut on October 7th of the same year in the World Cup qualifier against Belgium (final score 4-0 for Belgium).
