Jamie Maclaren (born July 29, 1993 in Melbourne , Victoria ) is an Australian football player . Since January 2019 he has been playing for the Australian first division club Melbourne City FC .

Career

Youth and club career

The son of a Maltese mother and a Scottish father, who has both Australian and British citizenship , grew up in a suburb northwest of Melbourne . He first played on the student team for the local Sunbury United team at the age of four or five and then moved to Green Gully SC in 2003 .

In July 2009, at the age of 15, he was invited to trial training in England for the Blackburn Rovers in the U-16 squad. In his first friendly, he scored two goals against the U-16s from Derby County . In another friendly against Manchester United , he managed a hat trick that led to a contract offer from Rovers. Maclaren benefited from the support of the Australians Vince Grella and Brett Emertoory in Blackburn, where he was soon invited to the training of the A-team. After four years in England, he could not prevail in the first team of the Rovers and was released at the end of the 2012/13 season.

He returned to Australia for the 2013-14 season and signed a three-year contract with Perth Glory . He played his first game against Adelaide United with a 3-1 defeat. Maclaren then scored his first goal for Perth Glory in a 1-0 win over Melbourne City FC on October 27, 2013 . In the 2014/15 season he scored ten goals in 23 games and was nominated as the best young player of the year. He also played a number of games for the Perth Glory second team, who play in the National Premier Leagues . There he scored eleven goals in five games.

On July 5, 2015, Maclaren signed a two-year deal with Brisbane Roar . Maclaren made his debut against the Western Sydney Wanderers on October 8, 2015 . In his 50th game in the A-League scored a goal against his former club Perth Glory. On March 12, 2016, he managed his second hat trick in beating Melbourne Victory . Maclaren ended the 2015/16 A-League season with 18 goals, finishing second in the scorers' list behind Melbourne City FC's Uruguayan Bruno Fornaroli . Maclaren scored two more goals in the final round to 20 goals in 25 games. At the end of the 2015/16 season, he was named the best young player of the year. In the 2016/17 season Maclaren scored 19 goals for Brisbane Roar, making him the top scorer of the A-League together with the Kosovar Besart Berisha of Melbourne Victory .

For the 2017/18 season Maclaren moved to Germany in the 2nd Bundesliga for SV Darmstadt 98 . He was used seven times in the first half of the season for the lilies. In order to secure a place in the squad of the Australian national team for the upcoming World Cup in Russia, he was loaned to the Scottish first division club Hibernian Edinburgh in January 2018 . For the Hibs, he completed 15 league games and scored eight goals, including a hat trick in a 5-5 win against Glasgow Rangers on the final day of the game. In August 2018 Maclaren was awarded again to Edinburgh.

In January 2019, the contract with SV Darmstadt 98 was terminated and Maclaren is moving back to his home country for the Australian first division club Melbourne City FC .

National team

Maclaren began his international career for Scotland's U-19 team . His first appearances were against Denmark and Norway . Then Maclaren decided to play for his native country, Australia. He was used in the Australian U-20 team and scored a goal against hosts Turkey in the last group game at the 2013 U-20 World Cup in June 2013 . He was also part of the U-23 team in Australia at the U-23 Asian Cup in 2016 in Qatar .

Jamie Maclaren would also have been eligible to play for the national team of Malta , but he rejected an offer from the Maltese. In May 2016 Maclaren was nominated for the first time for the Australian senior team for a friendly against England . In November 2016 he was again in the selection for the World Cup qualifier against Thailand . Here he played 57 minutes and the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Maclaren was nominated for the Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia . Here he was substituted on in the last group game against Chile in the 62nd minute. MacLaren was nominated for the World Cup in Russia in summer 2018. Australia were eliminated in the group stage. MacLaren did not play a game.
