The National Premier Leagues (NPL) is the semi-professional second-highest division in Australian football . It is under the supervision of the Football Federation Australia in cooperation with its subordinate regional associations of the Australian states and territories . According to the regional associations (with the exception of the Northern Territory Association), the NPL is divided into eight different leagues , whose premiership winners play the NPL champions in a final round at the end of the season . This qualifies for the first main round of the FFA Cup next year.
Since the top division in Australia, the A-League , is organized as a franchise league independent of the NPL, promotion or relegation from one league to the other is not possible. Below the NPL are the national leagues, which in some regions are linked to the NPL through promotion and relegation.
history
The National Premier Leagues was founded in 2013 and began playing in March of the same year. It consisted in the first season of five independent leagues of the five regional associations from the Australian Capital Territory ( Capital Football ), New South Wales ( Football NSW ) with the exception of the northern part, Queensland ( Football Queensland ), South Australia ( Football Federation South Australia ) and Tasmania ( Football Federation Tasmania ).
It was not until 2014 that the regional associations from the northern part of New South Wales ( Northern New South Wales Football ), from Victoria ( Football Federation Victoria ) and Western Australia ( Football West ) joined them. Only the Northern Territory with its Football Federation Northern Territory has not yet been incorporated into the NPL (as of 2015 season).
