Serginho van Dijk or Sergio van Dijk for short (born August 6, 1982 in Assen ) is an Indonesian - Dutch football player .

Career

He started his career at LTC Assen . He later moved to the youth team at FC Groningen until he was pulled up into the first team in 1999. There he could not prevail, however, which is why he went to Helmond Sport in 2002 . After only three years he moved to FC Emmen . With both clubs, he did not get promoted to the honor division , the highest Dutch division.

On June 16, 2008 he went abroad and moved to the Australian club Brisbane Roar (then Queensland Roar ), where he signed a two-year deal after scouts saw him in a friendly against Redlands United in late May , in which he scored two goals. Van Dijk didn't really get into the team at the beginning of the season, but one goal and six assists in ten games were a satisfactory result. But at the end of the season he silenced the critics with nine goals this season. On January 17, 2009, he scored a hat trick in a 3-1 win against Sydney FC and was the first player of his club to ever succeed in such a trick.

On February 11, 2010, he moved to league rivals Adelaide United , where he initially only got a six-month contract to help Adelaide in the AFC Champions League . He made his debut almost two weeks later in a 1-0 win over the Pohang Steelers from South Korea . He scored his first goal on the second day of the Champions League in a 2-0 win over Shandong Luneng Taishan from China . On March 14, he signed a three-year contract with Adelaide. On January 21, 2011, he scored another hat trick in the 8-1 runaway win over North Queensland Fury . With sixteen goals during the A-League 2010/11 he won the top scorer .

At the beginning of 2013 he moved to Indonesia to Persib Bandung , for whom he scored 21 goals in 29 games. Sergio van Dijk returned to Adelaide United through Iranian club Sepahan and FC Suphanburi before joining Persib Bandung again. In early 2018 van Dijk returned to the Netherlands and joined the amateur club VV Pelikaan-S .

National team

On July 19, 2010 it was announced that he was eligible to play for the Indonesian national soccer team because his grandfather is from Indonesia . But at a meeting with Indonesian association representatives he learned that he would have to give up his Dutch citizenship as dual citizenship is not allowed in Indonesia. At first he refused to give up his other citizenship as most of his family is from the Netherlands . Ultimately, he gave up his Dutch citizenship to play for Indonesia. He has already received his Indonesian passport. On March 23, 2013, he made his debut for the Indonesian national team in the international match against Saudi Arabia . The native Dutchman made his second and so far last game on June 7, 2013 in the 3-0 defeat in Jakarta against the Netherlands .

Others

His first name Serginho is a tribute to the Brazilian soccer player Serginho Chulapa , who played for Brazil at the 1982 World Cup . His mother was a big believer in Brazil at the time. Van Dijk is a so-called Dutch Indonesian , which means that one of the parents has Indonesian roots.

Van Dijk owns a fashion label called Sixlovesnine .
