Thomas Zündel (born December 24, 1987 in Leoben ) is an Austrian football player .

Career

Start of career in Styria

Zündel began his career at USV Vasoldsberg . In 1998 he switched to USV Kainbach . In 2002 he came to the Academy of the Grazer AK , where he played until 2005. In January 2005 he joined the regional division SC Kalsdorf . With Kalsdorf he was relegated from the regional league in 2005.

After one and a half years at Kalsdorf, he moved to the second division club FC Gratkorn for the 2006/07 season . In September 2006 he made his debut in the second division when he came on as a substitute for Daniel Hofer on the ninth day of that season against SC-ESV Parndorf 1919 in the 76th minute . In April 2007, Zündel was against VfB Admira Wacker Mödling for the first time on Gratkorn's starting line-up before he was replaced by Daniel Brauneis at half-time . At the end of the season, Zündel had four appearances in the second-highest division.

The following season he scored his first professional goal in May 2008 in a 5-0 win against Parndorf. This should remain his only one in the season in which he was used in a total of 28 league games. In the 2008/09 season, the winger started with a goal on both matchday four against the Red Bull Juniors and against SC Wiener Neustadt . The Gratkorner won both games through the decisive goals from Zündel. At the end of his third season as a player for FC Gratkorn, he had 31 appearances and four hits.

In the 2009/10 season he was used in 32 of the 33 season games, only in November 2009 against FC Wacker Innsbruck he was not used. The 2010/11 season was not very successful for Zündel and his club: As the bottom of the table, the Styrians were relegated from the second division to the regional league at the end of the season . However, Zündel should not contest this course.

Change to Grödig and Sperre

Zündel received his first red card in the Bundesliga against Red Bull Salzburg (2013)

After relegation, Zündel moved to the second division club SV Grödig for the 2011/12 season . His first season with the club from the state of Salzburg was mixed. After two appearances in the league at the beginning of the season, the Styrian was mostly used for Grödig's fourth-rate amateurs between August and November 2011, for whom he played a total of seven games. After the winter break of that season, however, the tide turned and Zündel developed into a regular player: If he had played five games in the league in the first half of the season, there were twelve in the second half of the season.

In the 2012/13 season, Zündel remained a regular under his new coach Adi Hütter . At the end of the season, they even rose to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history . Zündel came to 30 missions in the promotion season and remained without a goal. He finally made his debut in the top Austrian division in July 2013, when he played against SV Ried from the start on the first matchday of the 2013/14 season .

In November 2013, Grödig separated from Zündel, who had only missed one game that was suspended. The reason for the separation was the betting scandal surrounding his teammate Dominique Taboga and the former national player Sanel Kuljić . In February 2014 he was banned for one year retrospectively from December 2013 due to his involvement in the "Causa Taboga".

Back to the Bundesliga via the regional league

After the suspension had ended, Zündel returned to the regional league for SC Kalsdorf in January 2015, for whom he had already played between 2005 and 2006. He played twelve games for Kalsdorf in the 2014/15 season and scored two goals.

After half a year at Kalsdorf, he moved back to the Bundesliga for the 2015/16 season and joined Wolfsberger AC , where he received a one-year contract with an option for another year. In July 2015 he played his first international game at Wolfsberg, when he started the second round first leg against FK Schachzjor Salihorsk for the Carinthians, who qualified for international business in fifth place in the 2014/15 season . The WAC was eliminated in the third round against Borussia Dortmund . He played his first game in the Bundesliga since his engagement in Grödig in August 2015 against SV Ried. At the end of the season he had 24 Bundesliga appearances.

In April 2016, Zündel's contract with the Carinthians was extended to June 2017. In the 2016/17 season, the Styrian made 20 league appearances in which he again failed to score. In June 2017, his expiring contract was renewed for a year. In the 2017/18 season, he played 23 Bundesliga games and remained without a goal this season.

After the 2017/18 season, he left the WAC after three years.

Return to the regional league

After half a year without a club, Zündel moved to the regional division Grazer AK in January 2019, for whom he had already played as a youth. With the GAK he rose to the second division at the end of the season.
