Life

Club affiliations

Hartford received his first professional contract with West Bromwich Albion , where he was under contract from 1967 to 1974.

He then moved to Manchester City , where he was under contract from 1974 to 1979 and later again from 1981 to 1984. Hutchison completed a total of 260 league games for the Citizens ; more than for any other club.

At all other clubs, except for the two previously mentioned, Hartford was never engaged for more than a maximum of two years. His shortest club affiliations were Nottingham Forest in 1979 with only three and Oldham Athletic in 1989 with seven appearances.

Heart defect

He never played a game for Leeds United , from which he was signed in early November 1971. But a heart defect found in the medical examination led to the immediate termination of the contract; only a few hours before his intended debut in the home game against Leicester City on November 6, 1971. His previous employer West Brom had sent him to a heart specialist after his rejection from Leeds, who confirmed a heart defect, but this did not prevent him from continuing classified athletic career. Just a week after Leeds' contract was terminated, he was back for West Brom in an away game at Nottingham Forest.

National team

Between 1972 and 1982 Hartford played a total of 50 international appearances for the Scottish national team , in which he scored five goals. The highlight of his international career was his participation in the soccer world championships 1978 and 1982. At the 1978 World Cup he played all three preliminary round matches of the Bravehearts , which surprisingly lost their opening game against Peru (1: 3) and in the second game against Iran did not have a 1 : 1 had come out, so that the 3-2 win in the last group game against the Netherlands could not save the Scots from premature elimination. At the 1982 World Cup , Hartford was used on June 18, 1982 in the second group match against Brazil (1: 4). When he was replaced by Alex McLeish in the 68th minute , his career in the national team was over.
