Joseph "Joe" Jordan (born December 15, 1951 in Carluke , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player.

Nineteen-year-old center forward Joe Jordan came to England in 1970 for Leeds United , who had formed a brilliant team around players like Allan Clarke , Mick Jones , Billy Bremner and Peter Lorimer in the early 1970s . For a long time Jordan had to be content with the reserve bank. His breakthrough came in 1973. In the First Division he played more often and scored nine goals. When he was allowed to play the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup against AC Milan from the start, he became a regular. Shortly afterwards he made his first international match for Scotland . One summer later, he took part in the 1974 World Cup in Germany and wore the jersey with the number 9. Scotland was eliminated unbeaten in the preliminary round.

In 1975 he reached the final with Leeds in the European Cup against Bayern Munich . After the 2-0 defeat by the German champions, some of the older players left Leeds and the team was never able to build on their old strengths. During the winter break of the 1977/78 season, Jordan moved to Manchester United , which Leeds fans viewed as treason, as did the later changes from Éric Cantona or Rio Ferdinand to Manchester United.

Joe Jordan took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . One of the strongest teams in Scotland that had ever reached a World Cup tournament drove to this World Cup. The confidence was accordingly. But already the first game brought disillusionment. Although Jordan had achieved the interim 1-0 lead for his team, they lost the opening game against Peru 3-1. Not Jordan or his strike partner from Liverpool FC Kenny Dalglish were the stars, but the Peruvian Teófilo Cubillas . Again the preliminary round meant the end of all hopes.

Jordan remained one of the best center forwards on the British Isles and moved to Italy for AC Milan in 1981. With his participation in the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 Jordan was the only Scottish soccer player to take part in World Cup finals three times. In the third group game against the Soviet Union , he scored the goal to lead 1-0, but injured himself in this game. Scotland were eliminated again in the preliminary round and Jordan never again made an international match for Scotland. He made a total of 52 appearances and scored 10 goals for Scotland.

After a season at Hellas Verona in 1983/84 , he moved back to England for Southampton FC , where he ended his active career in 1987.

Joe Jordan was one of the most feared center-forwards in the First Division, but not only his scoring tactics contributed to this, but also his appearance. In his early years he lost his incisors playing a game and took out the artificial teeth before each game, making him look terrifying on the pitch too.
