Allan John Clarke (called Sniffer ; born July 31, 1946 in Short Heath ) is a former English football player . For years he played at Leeds United , with whom he caused a sensation in England and internationally.
Player career
In the club
Clarke started his career at Walsall FC when he was sixteen . In 1966 he moved to Fulham FC before Leicester City signed him in 1968. The highlight was reaching the FA Cup final in 1969, which was lost to Manchester City .
A short time later, Clarke moved to Leeds United, his most successful station as a professional, for £ 165,000. With the team, top places were regularly taken, several times even the runner-up. However, it was not until 1974 that Clarke could celebrate the championship with his colleagues. Five points ahead of runner-up Liverpool FC were in the end.
In 1971 Clarke and his team reached the final of the trade fair cup against Juventus Turin , which was decided in favor of Leeds by the away goals rule . After he had not yet scored in the 2-2 draw in the first leg, he scored the 1-0 opening goal in the second leg, which ended 1-1.
After the FA Cup final was surprisingly lost to Chelsea in 1970 , Clarke's team reached the final two years later. This time he scored the only goal of the game in which Arsenal FC were beaten.
National team
In 1970 he was appointed to the England squad for the 1970 World Cup - without having previously played an international match . He made his debut in the opening game against Czechoslovakia . In total, he played 19 games for his country.
Coaching career
After Clarke tore a cruciate ligament in 1978 , his contract with Leeds United was not renewed. He switched to FC Barnsley as a player- coach , with whom he rose to the Second Division in 1979 . Then his old employer Leeds United recruited him in September 1980. However, the success failed and in 1982 the club had to relegate. Clarke was then inherited by his former teammate Eddie Gray .
1983/84 he coached Scunthorpe United , 1985 he returned to Barnsley FC. After initial success, he was dismissed in November 1989 because the club found itself at the bottom of the table. In the spring of 1990 he went to Lincoln City , where he was released after six months.
In the mid-1990s, Clarke tried to host a football show on the commercial broadcaster ITV Digital . Clarke now lives with family near Glasgow .
