Hafler Trio
The Hafler Trio (H3O for short) is an English music project that is assigned to conceptual art and that has presented countless experimental publications since 1984, which can best be classified in the field of ambient and musique concrète and which often have a philosophical background.
Despite the misleading group name, the Hafler Trio mainly consists of Andrew M. McKenzie (* 1963 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) and changing partners. McKenzie released his first single at the age of 14, then founded the punk band Flesh before turning to experimental electronic music and in 1980 the Hafler Trio , which has released a large number of releases on various labels since 1984. The publications are usually supplemented by explanations of the sound experiments they contain.
The name Hafler Trio is said to go back to David Hafler, who is said to have developed a surround sound system from three loudspeakers in the 1940s. In addition to McKenzie, Chris Watson of Cabaret Voltaire was a founding member. The third member at the foundation, Dr. Edward Moolenbeek, it turned out to be a joke: the name comes from a supposed expert in psychoacoustic research around 1930.
In addition to Andrew McKenzie, numerous well-known musicians have contributed to the releases of the Hafler Trio, including: a. Adi Newton ( Clock DVA ), Z'ev , David Tibet ( Current 93 ), Genesis P-Orridge ( Psychic TV ), Annie Sprinkle , Jónsi Birgisson ( Sigur Rós ), Michael Gira ( Swans ), Claude Vivier, Erla Þórarinsdóttir, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and John Lacey (COUM Transmissions). On Murray Fontana Orchestra McKenzie is supported by Nurse with Wound , Snuff was created with Willem De Ridder . In 2003 and 2005 publications appeared in collaboration with Autechre .
The Hafler Trio also recorded a soundtrack for Brion Gysin's “ Dreamachine ”, which contained extensive documentation on the reproduction of such a device; some replicas were even sold by the group itself.
In 1992 Hafler Trio released a 31-scene film called Just Because A Cat Has Her Kittens in the Oven Doesn't Make them Biscuits , which was distributed by Temple Press Ltd., the publisher affiliated with Temple Records . The film also contained lyrics by Z'ev and Genesis P-Orridge.
Most of the publications of the Hafler Trio appeared only in very small editions, many more recent publications even only in direct sales by Andrew McKenzie. However, some albums have also been reissued in large numbers by large labels such as Mute Records .
