The Scottish League Cup was played for the 36th time in 1981/82 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 8, 1981 and ended with the final on November 28, 1981 in Hampden Park in Glasgow. Officially, the cup competition was held as Bell's Whiskey Scottish League Cup . Dundee United started as defending champions in the competition, which won against FC Dundee in the Dundee Derby 3-0 in the previous year's final . At this year's event, United was able to reach the League Cup final for the third time in a row. In the final, however, the team lost to the Glasgow Rangers with 1: 2. The Rangers won their eleventh league cup, expanding their lead over Celtic Glasgow with their eight successes.
