The Scottish League Cup was played for the 11th time in 1956/57 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 11, 1956 and ended with the repeat final on October 31, 1956 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, FC Aberdeen started the competition that prevailed against FC St. Mirren in the previous year's final . In this year's final, Celtic Glasgow met Partick Thistle . The Bhoys reached the League Cup final for the first time. It was the second final for the Jags after 1954 . Celtic won the replay final 3-0 after a 0-0 win in their first game. With a brace from John McPhail and another hit from Bobby Collins , Celtic was able to win the league cup for the first time. The Jags lost the final for the second time after 1954 against FC East Fife . In the Scottish Championship , Celtic was fifth in the table, seventeen points behind the champions, the Glasgow Rangers . The Jags finished eighth.
