John McPhail (born December 27, 1923 in Glasgow , Scotland ; † November 6, 2000 ibid) was a Scottish football player and journalist . In his active career as a player, which he played exclusively at Celtic Glasgow , he won numerous titles. After the end of his playing career, he worked as a journalist.
Career

John McPhail was born in 1923 in the Lambhill district of Glasgow . He began his football career at FC Strathclyde for which he played until 1941. As a 17-year-old McPhail signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow in October 1941 . With Celtic he won the Coronation Cup in the following years , which was played in honor of the coronation of Elizabeth II , the Scottish championship in the season 1953/54 and 1951 and 1954 the cup . McPhail played at Celtic throughout his career and played 335 games (142 league games) from 1941 to the end of his career in 1956, scoring 100 goals (54 league goals). McPhail, who was popular with Celtic throughout his life and beyond, was nicknamed Hooky through his outside passports .
After finishing his career as a player, he worked as a journalist for the Daily Record and The Celtic View .
He died in Glasgow in 2000 at the age of 76.
National team
John McPhail played five times for the Scottish team between 1949 and 1953 and scored three goals. He made his debut in November 1949 against Wales in the World Cup qualifier for the upcoming finals in Brazil and scored at the same time.
