David Mathers (born October 23, 1931 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player who played in midfield .

Life

After graduating from school in 1947, Mathes completed an apprenticeship in Partick Thistle's junior division , where he received a professional contract two years later at the age of 17 . Three times he reached the final of the Scottish League Cup with the Firhill Club , which was lost in all cases: 1954 , against FC East Fife (2: 3), 1957 , against Celtic Glasgow (0: 3) and 1959 , against Heart of Midlothian (1: 5).

In September 1959 Mathers moved to Headington United, which was renamed Oxford United in the summer of 1960 . In December 1960 he returned to Partick Thistle, but did not complete a game there and moved at the end of the 1960/61 season to FC East Stirlingshire , in whose ranks he let his active career end.

His only international match for the Scottish national team he completed on May 25, 1954 in a 2-1 win over Finland. Mathers was also part of Scotland's 22-man World Cup squad in 1954 , but was one of nine "eliminated" players who ultimately did not make the trip because only 13 players were taken to the 1954 World Cup finals .
