Michael "Mike" Haughney (born December 10, 1925 in Paisley , Scotland , † February 22, 2002 in Peoria , IL , United States ) was a Scottish football player . In his playing career he won numerous titles with Celtic Glasgow .
Career
society
Mike Haughney was born in Paisley, about seven miles west of Glasgow , in 1925 . He began his football career at Newtongrange Star near the Scottish capital Edinburgh . He grew up in Dalkeith and attended St. David's School. On January 29, 1949 he moved to Celtic Glasgow . On August 13 of the same year he made his debut together with Bobby Collins for the Bhoys in the group stage of the Scottish League Cup 1948/49 against the Glasgow Rangers . During his early days at Celtic , he also studied at the University of Edinburgh and was only able to train part-time. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce.
"He has the hardest and most accurate shot I've seen in years, if he could train regularly, he would soon achieve top grade."
With Celtic he won the Coronation Cup in 1953 , which was played in honor of the coronation of Elizabeth II . In the season 1953/54 he won with Celtic the Scottish championship and 1951 and 1954 the Cup . In 1957 and 1958 he also won the league cup with the team . Haughney played for Celtic from 1949 to 1957 in 233 games (159 league games) and scored 44 goals (32 league goals) before ending his career at the end of the 1956/57 season.
In 1957 he emigrated to the United States with his wife. He lived on Palos Heights in the Cook County of Chicago. He died in February 2002 at the age of 76 in Peoria, Illinois.
National team
Mike Haughney played once for the Scottish national team in 1954 . He was used against England in the World Cup qualifier for the upcoming finals in Switzerland , which was also the game of the British Home Championship .
Second World War
During World War II , Haughney served as a captain with the Seaforth Highlanders in the Africa campaign .
