German Media Prize for Development Policy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Media Prize for Development Policy (previously: Media Prize for Development Policy ) honors journalists for outstanding work on the subjects of human rights and development. The prize is awarded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with Deutsche Welle (DW). The Deutsche Welle Academy redesigned the 2013 Media Prize and is implementing it organizationally. The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) supports the media award in an advisory capacity with regard to human rights norms. The patron is the German Federal President.

history

The German Media Prize for Development Policy was first awarded in 1975 by the then Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation Egon Bahr . Since then, German journalists have been honored annually, whose contributions, in the opinion of the BMZ, “promote the German public's awareness of the need for partnership-based cooperation between industrialized and developing countries”.

Realignment

In 2013, the German Media Prize was awarded for the first time in cooperation with Deutsche Welle. In addition to Germans, journalists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe were also able to take part for the first time. The main focus was on the topic of “Human Rights and Development”. Entries could be submitted in seven different languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian. The award was made across all media (audio, video, print, online). A total of seven prizes were awarded, each associated with 2000 euros and an invitation to the award ceremony in Berlin.

An additional special award from the audience was aimed at African press photographers. This competition was also awarded for the creative implementation of the topic “Human Rights and Development” and included prize money of 2000 euros as well as an invitation to the award ceremony in Berlin.

The jury

In 2013, the jury consisted of the following media makers, development cooperation experts and representatives of human rights organizations: Rita Knobel-Ulrich, filmmaker, Jens Schröder, deputy editor-in-chief of GEO , Simone Pott, press spokeswoman for Welthungerhilfe , Michael Windfuhr, deputy director of the German Institute for Human Rights , Auma Obama , Chairwoman of the Sauti Kuu Foundation in Kenya and Ingo Zamperoni , moderator of the “Tagesthemen”. The award ceremony took place on August 14th in the ARD capital studio.
