Paul James Hartley (born October 19, 1976 in Hamilton ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach.

Hartley began his professional career in 1994 at Hamilton Academical and played two seasons with the Accies until Millwall piloted him for £ 400,000 in the English league, where he played for a year and also played for the Scottish U-21 national team. In 1997 he returned to Scotland for a transfer fee of £ 150,000 and played for the Raith Rovers before joining Hibernian a season later and advancing with the Hibs from the First Division to the Scottish Premier League .

In 1999/00 he was briefly loaned to Greenock Morton , but then joined St. Johnstone , which, however, was relegated at the end of the season.

During his time with the Saints , Billy Stark turned him from winger to central midfielder. This change soon bore fruit as Hartley's performance continued to improve. He returned to the House of Lords in 2003 when he signed for Heart of Midlothian on a free transfer . At the Hearts , Hartley continued to improve, helping them to third place in 2003/04 and the UEFA Cup .

In January 2005, Celtic offered £ 300,000 for Hartley, but the Hearts turned it down. He then received a contract with improved salaries.

In March 2005, Paul Hartley played his first international match for Scotland against Italy . He received other appointments and was able to record his first goal in the national dress in a 3-0 victory over Slovenia in October 2005.

One of Hartley's best appearances was his three-goal game in the semi-finals of the Scottish FA Cup against the Hearts ' arch-rival Hibernian. This was his first hat trick as a professional. In the final he was sent off after a poor performance, but the team from Edinburgh remained victorious against the then third division Gretna and won on penalties.

In January 2007, the Rangers from Glasgow and Aston Villa sought Hartley's service. Hearts trainer Valdas Ivanauskas turned down both offers. However, on Jan. 26, it was confirmed that Paul Hartley is for sale and would not be on the roster for the next game. Hartley was finally sold to Celtic on January 31st for £ 1.1 million. Hartley was able to win the championship title twice with Celtic. At the end of the 2008/09 season, however, his contract was no longer extended. Then he was under contract with Bristol City .

In October 2017 Hartley took over the coaching position at the second division club FC Falkirk , after a weak start to the 2018/19 season, in which the club was bottom of the table after three games without winning a point, the coach and club parted ways at the end of August 2018.
