Patrick Joseph "Pat" Bonner (born May 24, 1960 in Burtonport , County Donegal , Republic of Ireland ) is a former Irish football player.

Career history

Patrick Bonner, known as Pat or Packie , began his career as a goalkeeper for the Keadue Rovers in his native Ireland. In 1978 the Scottish coaching legend Jock Stein discovered him and he received a contract with Celtic Glasgow . With the Celts he had a long (642 games) and above all extremely successful (winning eleven titles) time. In 1995 Bonner moved to Kilmarnock FC for three seasons and in 1999 he played for Reading FC in England. From February 2003 to October 2005 he was a goalkeeper coach under the direction of Brian Kerr for the Irish national team . Today he works as a football expert for television.

Bonner also made a name for himself as a national goalkeeper. Between 1981 and 1996 he was in the boys' goal in Green a total of 80 times. He experienced the heyday of the Irish national team from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. He was at the European Championship in Germany in 1988 , Ireland's first participation in a major football tournament, in the historic 1-0 victory over England. At the 1990 World Cup , Bonner became a hero when he parried Daniel Timofte's penalty in the round of 16 against Romania and thus ensured his team progress. In the quarterfinals, the Irish then lost to hosts Italy. At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Bonner and his colleagues took revenge with a 1-0 win over the Italians. But this time the shamrocks came to an end in the round of 16 against the Netherlands - the game ended 0: 2, with Bonner doing a less good figure on the second goal. Bonner then contested the qualification for the European Championship in 1996 , in which the Irish failed again against the Dutch.
