European Football Championship 1988 / Ireland

This article looks at the Irish national football team during the 1988 European Football Championship . It was Ireland's first participation in a major tournament. Two years later, they also qualified for the World Cup in Italy . Ireland was only able to qualify for a European Championship in 2012 .

Ireland won sensationally in their opening game against England and also took a point from the USSR in their second game. Now a draw against the Netherlands was enough to move into the semi-finals, but in the end eight minutes were missing.
