European Championship qualification

The USSR looked like the sure winner of this group for a long time until they only managed to tie at home against disappointing defending champions France. This loss of points brought the GDR back into play and the decision to win the group now had to be made in a direct duel in East Berlin. The late compensation by Alejnikau gave the USSR the tickets for the finals, so to speak, which were finally secured with a victory in the last game against Iceland.
