Sergei Pawlowitsch Baltatscha ( Ukrainian Сергій Павлович Балтача , Russian Сергей Павлович Балтача ; born February 17, 1958 in Mariupol , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet football player.

Career

Sergei Baltacha has been a member of Dynamo Kiev's first team since 1977 . With this team he won the Soviet championship four times in 1980, 1981, 1985 and 1986 and the Soviet Cup in 1978, 1982, 1985 and 1987 . In the 1985/86 season, the defensive midfielder won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Dynamo Kiev .

For the Soviet national team he played a total of 45 times between 1980 and 1988 and scored two goals. At the soccer tournament of the 1980 Olympic Games , he won the bronze medal with the Soviet team. In 1982 Baltatscha took part in the World Cup in Spain and in 1988 he was in the squad of the Soviet team at the European Championship in Germany.

In 1988, Baltacha moved to Ipswich Town as one of the first Soviet footballers abroad . From 1990 to 1993 he played in Scotland for St. Johnstone FC . In 1993 he moved to Inverness Caledonian Thistle where he ended his active career in 1995.

Baltatscha now lives in Great Britain and works there as a physical education teacher. His son Sergei (* 1979) played as a professional soccer player for FC St. Mirren, among others, and made three appearances for the Scottish U-21 national team . His daughter Olena Baltatscha (1983-2014) was a British professional tennis player.
