U 17 deployments during the war

At the beginning of the war, U 17 belonged to the 1st submarine flotilla in Kiel . From January 10, 1916 until the end of the war, the boat was used for training purposes.

The successful attack on the English steamer Glitra (866 GRT) on October 20, 1914 by U 17 was the first sinking of a merchant ship in the First World War . Six days later, U 17 torpedoed the French canal ferry Amiral Ganteaume (4,590 GRT) near Cap Gris-Nez , killing 40 people. It was the first attack by a German submarine on a merchant ship in World War I without warning.

From January 27, 1919, the U 17 was scrapped at the Kaiserliche Werft Kiel. The pressed casing was sold to Stinnes AG in early 1920 .
