SM U 35 ( His Majesty U 35 ) was a submarine of the German Imperial Navy . It is still considered the most successful submarine in the world today.
history
The drafts for the two-hull open sea boat type U 31 - U 41 came from the Germania shipyard in Kiel . The engineer Hans Techel was largely responsible for the development of this type . The two-hull ocean-going boats type U 51 - U 56 , U 63 - U 65 and U 81 - U 86 were derived from these drafts . U 35 was commissioned on March 29, 1912. It was supposed to be delivered on March 1, 1914. Due to delays in the construction of Germaniawerft- two-stroke - diesel engines but the boat was the only on 18 April 1914 run stack . The commissioning took place on November 3rd, 1914 under Lieutenant Waldemar Kophamel . The lead engineer was marine engineer Hans Fechter . U 35 was subordinated to the 2nd Flotilla , which was stationed in Heligoland .
Calls
The U 35 completed its first two missions from 19 to 21 and from 24 to 26 January 1915. These were reconnaissance missions in the North Sea . Three enemy voyages followed, on which 17 merchant ships with a total of 25,716 GRT were sunk.
In August 1915, the U 35 and the U 34 were transferred to the Mediterranean at the Austro-Hungarian naval base in Cattaro for the U-Flotilla Pola . Three merchant ships with a total of 4067 GRT were sunk. Two enemy voyages followed, on which 15 merchant ships with 59,409 GRT were destroyed.
At the end of October 1915, U 35 took over ten Turkish officers near Bodrum as well as war material to support the rebellious Senussi who fought against the British and Italian colonial powers in the Libyan desert . As far as the weather conditions allowed, two Turkish schooners were towed. The convoy reached the Libyan coastal town of Bardia , where the cargo could be unloaded. In the Gulf of Sollum ( Egypt ) the British steamer Tara (1862 BRT) was sunk on November 5, 1915 and a gunboat in the port of Sollum was destroyed. (→ Action by SM U 35 in the Gulf of Sollum )
On November 18, 1915, Lieutenant Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière U 35 took over . Under his command, it carried out 15 more patrols, mainly in the Mediterranean area, on which 189 merchant ships with a total of 446,708 GRT were sunk. In addition, on February 29, 1916, the British gunboat Primula with 1250 tons and on October 2, 1916 the French gunboat Rigel with 1250 tons were sunk. One of the patrols under de la Perière, the 14th operation of U 35 , is still considered to be the most successful to have completed a submarine. It lasted from July 26th to August 20th, 1916. 54 merchant ships with 90,350 GRT were sunk on it. On October 4, 1916, U 35 sank the French troop transporter Gallia (14,966 GRT) southwest of the island of San Pietro off Sardinia , killing 600 people. The Gallia was the largest ship sunk by U 35 .
On March 17, 1918, Lieutenant Ernst von Voigt took over the boat. He made two attempts at operations with U 35 , an enemy mission and a relocation march from Cattaro to Germany . Both had to be stopped early due to machine damage.
On July 18, 1918, Lieutenant Heino von Heimburg took over the boat. Under him, U 35 was transferred to Kiel. The ferry trip lasted from September 7th to October 9th, 1918.
Whereabouts
After the end of the First World War in November 1918, U 35 was transferred to England on November 26, 1918 and broken up in Blyth between 1919 and 1920 .
