SM U 24 was a German submarine of the Imperial Navy that was used in the First World War .

history

The boat was commissioned from the Germania shipyard in Kiel on March 18, 1911 . The commissioning took place on December 6, 1913.

On New Year's Day 1915 U 24 sank the British ship of the line Formidable in the English Channel off the Isle of Portland with two torpedo hits .

On June 28, 1915, the boat chased the mule carrier Armenian off the coast of Cornwall and sank it with artillery and torpedoes. 29 people died in the sinking, including US mule handlers and 1,400 mules.

On August 19, 1915, U 24 sank the British passenger steamer Arabic of the White Star Line in front of the Old Head of Kinsale on the southern Irish coast without warning . 44 people were killed, including two Americans.

From August 24, 1917 until the end of the war, the U 24 was used for training purposes.

Whereabouts

The boat was delivered to Great Britain on November 22, 1918 and broken up in Swansea in 1922 .
