The SM U 45 was a diesel-electric submarine of the German Imperial Navy that was used in the First World War .
Calls
U 45 was launched on 15 April 1915 at the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk from the stack and was put into service on 9 October 1915th The first and only commander of the submarine was Erich Sittenfeld .
U 45 carried out seven patrols in the eastern North Atlantic and the Barents Sea during the First World War . A total of 24 merchant ships from the Entente and neutral states with a total tonnage of 45,622 GRT were sunk.
Whereabouts
On September 12, 1917 U 45 was at the entrance to the North Channel north of Ireland and west of Scotland . It was torpedoed from the stern tube by the British submarine D7 . U 45 was on the water surface when the British torpedo hit and sank the boat. Only two crew members survived the sinking, including the radio operator . Captain Sittenfeld was among the fallen. : As an approximate lower transition point following coordinates are 55 ° 48 ' N , 7 ° 30' W . U 45 was not lifted.
